Dag van de zingeving

[:nl]

Vele definities gaan over ecologie. Sommige anderen gaan over sociale impact.

Sustainable development is the kind of development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

[:en]Since a couple of years “sustainability” became some kind of a buzz word. Something used for good and for worse. “Sustainable or sustainability” can be interpreted on several ways. Several definitions concern ecology. Other are more focussing on social impact.

Sustainability in fact should be a verb. Or something that it never 100 reached. “Sustainable development” is better. You cannot buy a sustainable product. You cannot own a sustainable company. If you do – let me know – I’m here to prove you otherwise. A company can work on sustainable development. Getting better all the time…

The paradox of change – happiness

[:en]

  • The paradox of change

It’s a paradox. And apparently impossible for anyone to make a change for the better when it’s bad right now.

Let’s start with some examples.

  • Rich people can earn more easily
  • Healthy people can easily improve their health
  • Good singers can sing better
  • A good gardener improves day by day
  • Happy people easily stay happy

So, when you have your qualities or things you own it’s not to hard to get more of it.

I have my writing. I know I’m not the best – but I love it and I know I’m better than most. And all the time I get better.

I can speak for public – and every time I do I get better.

I design tents (yes, I do) – and every time it gets better.

The same counts for you. You’ve got qualities and you can get better at them.

But also the opposite is truth.

  • Poor people get poorer
  • Weak people get weaker
  • Unhappy people get more unhappy

This last is the key to change. How to get from poor to wealth – getting from weak to strong – getting from unhappy to happy.

It’s not easy and I would suggest that if anyone wants to make a change like this – look for help. Don’t try to do at yourself. It’s simple – but it’s not easy. It implements making choices that are totally new for you. The best person that can help you is someone who has the qualities you desire.

If you can’t find anyone – start reading about such a persons  -start looking at movies about the subject you desire – and stop – absolutely stop listening to people, media who are dealing with your old habits.

[:nl]De 5P’s voor duurzame groei[:en]The 5P’s for sustainable growth[:]

[:nl]

The 5P’s for sustainable growth

In willekeurige volgorde.

hands-1080792_960_720

people

Passion

Pleasure

Passie is iets intern.

Feeling happy is important for sustainable growth

Feeling happy is important for sustainable growth

Jakob De Proft

The 5P’s for sustainable growth

There is much talk about sustainable growth. Sustainability is a broad concept that means different things for different people. For many people it’s about ecology. For others it is about having a sustainable income or social equality.
In most of the literature sustainability it is described as where the environment, the economy and the social aspect touching. Other literature will turn the environmental factor over any other factor.

Definition of sustainability

I like the definition of sustainable development by the Brundtland Commission of the United Nation in 1987:

“Sustainable development is development That meets the needs of the present without Compromising the ability of future generations to meet their Own Needs.”

This definition is very strong and encompasses a very broad field. There are of course many other definitions are therefore no less strong.
Moreover, sustainability is a verb. You can not say that something is sustainable. That would mean that it could not be better. You can not say that something is ecological – surely there are less ecological traits in it. Sustainability is an ongoing pursuit of better. Therefore, we should better use this word as a verb: “making sustainable”. That implies that sustainable growth is a process.
Ever since I was a teenager I observed people and companies in their pursuit of a better world. Some people and companies have a greater impact than others.
Thousands of books have been published on one or more aspects of sustainability.

Marketing mix

To help you become more sustainable, we have developed the 5P’s. Which is a structure just like the classic 4 P’s of marketing (Product, Price, Place, Promotion – sometimes supplemented by Politics and Power). But that kind of marketing is not only obsolete – they bear no responsibility in it.

The 5P’s for sustainable growth

The 5P’s for Sustainable growth is not a marketing mix. It is a broad view of sustainability for businesses and for ordinary people like you and me.
It’s about People, Planet, Prosperity, Pleasure and Passion. These are listed in random order. Namely, they are all important. And when you apply them, the effect can be multiplied by big numbers.

Planet

“Planet” is the ecological side of the story. It takes the planet into account. Now and in the future. The negative impact that you have on the environment is minimal. You might even be taking a positive impact on the environment? But do not underestimate it. For some companies, we conduct a 5P audit. We measure the impact on the planet on as much as 30 points. The list of points for such an audit is never complete. But it gives a clear picture of where you are now and what can be done to make it even better.

hands-1080792_960_720

people

“People” is about the social impact of your actions. The social impact measured at different levels. Both locally and internationally. Think of products you buy through fair trade. Fair trade is also about more than trade with countries from “the poor south”. Also locally it is important that farmers get a fair price for their products.
And how about at work? Does everyone get the chance to develop themselves? Is your company open to different religions, culture, gender, ….

Prosperity

With the factor “prosperity” we enter the positive impact. We look at the contributions that you provide for yourself, your relationships and the environment. In most literature, this “P” stands for “Profit”. In a sense – that is truth. But it is not complete. In the current economic system – whether you like it or not – you don’t count if you spend more money than what you earn. That is not sustainable. Loosing money is no business. No money is minimal impact.
But there is much more than earning money. To what extent do you contribute to the profits for others? Think yourself in win-win terms? Or even better – in win-win terms (you, your partner and the world around you).

Passion

“Passion” is what motives you to continuousely become more sustainable. It gives you energy. By the power of passion your idea(l)s can grow and become reality. It is about following your personal life mission – to create a mission statement at work, in the family. Passion is something internally and powerful.

Pleasure

“Passion” is what happens internal, whilst “Pleasure” is rather wat show outside. Which doesn’t mean you’re not feeling it inside. The “Pleasure” side of the story is that what people find attractive in you. That’s why they like to get in touch with you and they want to get inspired by you.

Feeling happy is important for sustainable growth

Feeling happy is important for sustainable growth

It is the key to multiply your impact towards sustainable growth.
In this sense “Pleasure” is possibly the most powerful of all the 5 P’s. Just because it is so contagious for other people to join that the results of your efforts to move to the other P’s can grow exponentially. And often it is the most forgotten P.

It’s not a quick fix

The 5 P’s are not just a quick fix. They contribute to awareness. By using the 5P’s we create clarity and discover how easy it is to make a giant leap towards sustainability in our own environment. At home, in the family, with friends and at work.

Go for it. Make it fun – that’s the best way to continue! Inspire your friends and colleagues to join. Have fun together. Inspire others. Inspire us.

Thank you.

Beautiful images to grow sustainable behavior

[:en]When communicating about ecology and social working conditions often shocking images are used. Images that show how bad a situation is now at a certain place. Images that show dying birds, waste and poor working conditions. We need to change that. Let’s show the opposite. Let’s spread images about inventive people, beautiful scenes of nature, inspiring quotes, improving situations. Beautiful images!

One of the most beautiful (and photographed) lakes in Canada, Moraine Lake.

Beautiful images – lakes in Canada, Moraine Lake.

Repetition

“Repetition is the mother of learning, the father of action, which makes it the architect of accomplishment.”  (Zig Ziglar –  I think)

We all learn from repeating. And most of the learning we do is unconscious. Without really considering and thinking about it we accept what has been said and shown over and over again.

There is nothing wrong about that. That is just how our brains work. Knowing that we can influence our thoughts by consciously receiving a certain kind of messages. That is why passionate people accomplish more in a certain field that anyone else who tries to do the same. They just see the things they want even before they accomplished it. And then they act upon.

Not everyone is as passionate about sustainability as I am. Most people agree that ecology and social conditions are – at least somehow – important. But it’s not a fixed image in their mind. Their mind is programmed by what they see, hear and feel. By talk with collegues, soaps on television, newspapers, radio, etc.

What we see and hear most of all is what forms our thoughts. And our thought gives shape to our actions.

What most people see and hear about sustainability is not the beautiful images of it. That’s not how the mainstream media works. They give shocking images. Sometimes it is very necessary. But it is not all the time. Then we get to learn that this is the normal situation.

Beautiful images give direction to our deeds

The images we have in our minds are what we strive for. That works consciously and subconsciously. When we see our house clean and tidy in our mind – we cannot stand the feeling that stuff is laying on the ground. We’ll pick it up and put it on the right spot.

You might see yourself as a careful driver. As soon as you drive too fast – you will lower the speed in order to become more careful.

Our internal image gives direction to our actions. That is also why people throw away dirt on de ground at dirty places. That is the image of that place. And the same people use the waste bin at tidy places.

That is why it is so important to spread mainly positive images and stories. So many that “good” becomes the norm.

Let’s talk about people that are planting trees in the desert, about biodegradable plastics, about products that last for a lifetime.

Let’s show pictures from they way it should be. A blue ocean, green cities, laughing people, …

Why?

Just because the mainstream doesn’t care too much. They won’t do the effort to make changes towards more ecological behavior. But if the only thing they would see would be positive behavior – they cannot resist anymore in joining.

That is what we have to give to the youth (most of all), to teachers, to collegues and anyone else.

We need to integrate this positive images in our communication. It doesn’t take too much effort? Yet, the gains might be bigger than you can image.[:]

Sustainability audit for catering

Together with dauranta we’re working on a sustainability audit for catering companies. It will be part of the registration in order to join the dauranta network. This way dauranta will be able to serve sustainable catering all over Belgium and beyond.

Our view on sustainability is divided in five parts. Every part is as important as any other part. There is no sequence. We call these parts the five P’s.

  1. People
  2. Pleasure
  3. Planet
  4. Prosperity
  5. Passion
score

Dummy audit pie chart.

Let me briefly explain why every aspect is as important as the other. I’ll also explain what the sustainability audit looks like.

Briefly – because our audit is very extensive and will give a an interesting view on a catering company and how to become more sustainable.

People

This is the social aspect of our audit. We will investigate the social background of the used products. And that’s not all. We will also check the working conditions of your employees and the social mix between your employees.

We believe that care for people is essential for the future.

Planet

In intensive check on the ecological impact of your service based on the environmental impact of the production of food, the distance it comes from, animal welfare, CO2 and waste management.

Everyone understands that ecological care for the planet is extremely important.

Prosperity

In some literature this is called profit. That is not how we look at it. Making profit is very money related. I like that – but it is not important to keep on making more profit. As long as one is not loosing – that’s ok. We respect companies that decide to slow down business for their own happiness.

But prosperity is a lot more. It’s also healthy and nutritious food. And in our case – it’s also what you give to the dauranta network.

Pleasure

Harder to measure – but not less important – is the pleasure factor. It is why people will like your service and will come back. Because they enjoyed.Because they noticed you and your colleagues enjoyed. Because of the exotic feeling that your catering service offered.

There is simply no sustainable impact if people don’t like your service and do not come back.

Passion

Passion is not the same as pleasure. Pleasure is what you give. Passion is how you do it and how you inspire others (colleagues, clients, ….) to follow your example.

We can read your sustainable aspirations in your mission statement. All communication breaths out your desire to become more sustainable. And that is so intriguing for others.

First audits are planned in November 2015 in Belgium. Other European countries will follow in 2016.

W5P3 – manifestation of desires

Previous post   – next post
Putting self development training to the test. In these blogs I am reading and testing the Intimate Modeling course from Ken Haberman.
Intimate Modeling: Your FUN 7 Week Course to Create the Life You Want

Toolbox

“The manifestation of a desire is mostly and inner game” writes Ken Haberman in his book “Intimate Modeling”. That is absolutely truth. And Intimate Modeling is an “inner game”. It’s indeed a “game” and it happens “inside”.

It requires imagination. And Ken advices to use toolboxes to support the imagination. You can image that if you want to feel like Napoleon Bonaparte – it will be far easier if you’re dressed like him, standing on the fields of Waterloo (Belgium – where he lost his final battle) with dressed players around. Then you can more easily imagine the decision process of a leader like Napoleon.

If you are playing a situation in your life that will soon occur – you can use this toolbox. If you want to ask your girlfriend for marriage on a beautiful location – it helps if you have been there and try to image at the place how you will do it.

Manifestation of desires

Money is the thing I desire now. I feel so lucky to enjoy financial freedom to support numerous ecological projects and live a comfortable life with my family.

What I do not understand is what happened next. The moment I worked on clarifying this desire I received an email from a far relation. He invited me for a business talk. That was yesterday.

I cannot go into details now for obvious reasons (to me). But he proposed me a deal that will bring me serious and growing income in a way that supports numerous ecological projects and with the freedom to spend time (and quality time) with my family. The project starts the next months.

I’m so grateful!

Nevertheless – I will refine my desire to also enjoying financial income very soon.

Ask big and ask often

Let’s put it straight. If you are not asking for it – you are probably not going to get what you desire. As I am reading “Intimate Modeling” I am asking more often. I’m also asking for things that are out of my comfort zone.

Just a simple example. A company wants to deliver us wooden panels for a trace. They however charge 140 Euro for the delivery. They’re right – it’s quite heavy (2 tons). I want to get it delivered free. So I asked a few people – and indeed, someone wants to get the panels for me from the factory.

w5p2 – One desire at the time

Previous post   – next post

Putting self development training to the test. In these blogs I am reading and testing the Intimate Modeling course from Ken Haberman.

The mindsets again

  1. Concentrate on one desire at a time
  2. Choose a desire you can imagine experiencing
  3. Clarify the essence of your desire
  4. Find a great big mighty why
  5. Can you experience it right now?

Today I am reading them in depth. Yesterday I had the computer reading it for me as an audio-book. Honestly, that never touched my hearth. It just entered my brains. That’s it. Of course, the monotone voice of a computer is by far less inspiring that the passionate voice of Ken Haberman – who did not yet made an ebook from Intimate Modeling.

Let’s walk over.

Concentrate on one desire at the time

I know, I know, I know. Doesn’t mean I am doing this all the time. Somehow I how this book will help me to focus.

Focussing on one thing means I have to drop another thing. And that other thing might be important for me too. Difficult. My mind however explains me that focussing on more things is as good as having no focussing at all.

Ken advices to write down at least 5 desires that come to my mind at first – without further clarification:

  • Financial freedom
  • the MAD-book project
  • Travelling
  • Finish our house
  • Successfully launch the Domo tent project

I have putten numbers of importance next to the desire to see which one is more favorable to focus on.

Choose a desire you can imagine experiencing right now

This is easy – four of the desires are very easy to experience right now. Just in a fraction of a second.

But the MAD book project however, takes a bit more time. It’s a great idea that has been in the fridge for a while. I do not like to admit it – but it takes a little while to experience it. But I CAN experience it right now.

So – all five of the desires pass Ken Haberman’s test.

Clarify the essence of your desire

I like this paragraph. I like putting things into their essence.

I have choses to focus on the financial freedom for now. Which doesn’t mean I can’t do anything on the other desires. I know that when one desire is fulfilled the others will come too.

After some tryouts in my diary I came to this essence:

I feel so lucky to enjoy financial freedom to support numerous ecological projects and live a comfortable life with my family.

Find a big and might why

From the Intimate Modeling course:

An inspiring desire is one that we not only passionately want but we know exactly what we passionately want it.

Then I slowed down reading when I hit the following sentences:

What would you do even if you never got paid for it?

If you had only one year to live, what would you spend your time doing?

For sure the last sentence hit me as a dear friend came to know he’s suffering from a terminal cancer. He now want’s to travel and do some adventurous things.

Ken suggest to write down as many reasons as I can think of.  Which I mainly do in my diary. Here is a short list:

  • To travel more
  • To enjoy paying off debts
  • To support more people and projects
  • To travel
  • For our comfort

This list is growing easily.

Traveling more often is one of my desires.

Traveling more often is one of my desires.

Can you experience it right now?

The last mindset goes to the experience. My choice of focus passes this test. I am looking forward to what the rest of the week will bring to me.

Quotes

W5P1 – Desire Mindset

Previous post   – next post
Putting self development training to the test. In these blogs I am reading and testing the Intimate Modeling course from Ken Haberman.

What happened

Last week was the love yourself week. I honestly was not alway giving so much attention due to a lot of things that came from the outside. My son who got ill – a dear friend who is diagnosed with a terminal cancer – …

But that also gives me more energy to make of my life as much as possible. I owe it to my friend, my son, life wife, myself and the world.

Desire week

Ken writes that there is an enormous abundance around us. That there is not shortage of clear air, food, money and a lot more.

That statement is not easy to grasp for me. From different sources we all get to hear that there is shortage of clear air, food, money, jobs and a lot more.

I’m not telling Ken Haberman is wrong. Au contraire.. It’s again simple but not easy to place this new mindset into my head. I need to be strong and/or not listen to anyone or any source claiming the opposite.

But – as the book further explains – most people lack what they desire is because they are not open to desire. That is why the right desire mindset is so important.

Desire mindset

Here is the desire mindsets I will adopt in my life from this week on:

  1. Concentrate on one desire at a time
  2. Choose a desire you can imagine experiencing
  3. Clarify the essence of your desire
  4. Find a great big mighty why
  5. Can you experience it right now?
